Daily Scripture Reading Revelation 6:7 - 7:8
Many Christians do evangelism with the mindset that non-believers are non-believers because they do not have enough information about Jesus. Thus, they believe anyone can be persuaded to become a Christian if all their objections to Christianity are answered.
The sixth chapter of Revelation reveals that deep in the heart of many people is a more fundamental issue. Some people will not submit to Jesus no matter how much proof they have of His existence. They aren’t Christians because they don’t want to be Christians.
In the first six verses of Revelation 6 we read about the first three seals. The first seal revealed a horseman who went out to conquer. The second seal revealed a horseman who took peace from the earth so that men would slay one another. The third seal revealed a horseman who represented markets in which food was very expensive.
Rev. 6:7 ¶ And when He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come.”
Rev. 6:8 Then I looked, and behold, a pale horse; and he who sits on it had the name Death, and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.
Look at the word “fourth”. 25% of the world population will die. Right now, there are over 8 billion people on earth. If these events took place today, 2 billion people would die.
Compare that to World War 2, which is considered the deadliest conflict in human history. Military and civilian deaths from WW2 totaled around 75 million, which was about 3% of the world’s population. The death that will take place during the fourth seal will be many times greater than WW2.
People will die by various means. War will kill many. Then famine will result from the war which will kill additional people. Pestilence will result from the famine and perhaps from dead bodies that are not buried. Then wild animals will roam among the remaining population.
Rev. 6:9 ¶ And when He opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the witness which they had maintained;
Rev. 6:10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Master, holy and true? Will You not judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”
Rev. 6:11 And a white robe was given to each of them; and it was told to them that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow slaves and their brothers who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also.
Rev. 6:12 ¶ Then I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood;
Rev. 6:13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.
Don’t miss the severity of this event. It will be a combination of an earthquake, the sun going dark, and meteorites.
Rev. 6:14 And the sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
The earthquake will be so severe it will move every mountain and island. This will be as cataclysmic as the great flood in the days of Noah.
Rev. 6:15 Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man HID THEMSELVES IN THE CAVES and among the rocks of the mountains;
Rev. 6:16 and they SAID TO THE MOUNTAINS AND TO THE ROCKS, “FALL ON US AND HIDE US from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,
Notice all men will acknowledge the existence of God and the Lamb.
Rev. 6:17 for the great DAY OF their WRATH has come, and who is able to stand?”
Think about what should happen at that moment and compare it to what will happen. When all men admit God exists, they should submit to Him. What will happen instead is they will ask the rocks and caves to hide them.
Many Christians do evangelism with the mindset that those who are not saved are unbelievers because they do not have enough information about Christianity. However, the sixth seal proves that some men don’t serve Jesus because they don’t want to. No matter how much evidence they have, they will not submit to Jesus.
Some people have legitimate questions about our faith or understandable objections to becoming a Christian. When we do evangelism, we should do our best to overcome those hurdles. However, at some point we also have to recognize that some people may be spouting questions or objections to hide the fact that they simply do not want to obey Jesus.
Rev. 7:1 ¶ After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree.
This would be a very spooky event. There is almost always a breeze, so the absence of even a slight breeze would be weird.
Rev. 7:2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God; and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea,
Rev. 7:3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we have sealed the slaves of our God on their foreheads.”
Rev. 7:4 ¶ And I heard the number of those having been sealed, 144,000 sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:
Rev. 7:5 from the tribe of Judah, 12,000 having been sealed,
from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,
from the tribe of Gad 12,000,
Rev. 7:6 from the tribe of Asher 12,000,
from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,
from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,
Rev. 7:7 from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,
from the tribe of Levi 12,000,
from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,
Rev. 7:8 from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,
from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,
from the tribe of Benjamin, 12,000 having been sealed.
Many Christians do evangelism with the mindset that those who are not saved are unbelievers because they do not have enough information about Christianity. Some people have legitimate questions about our faith or understandable objections to becoming a Christian. However, the sixth seal proves that some people will refuse to bow down to Jesus no matter how much proof they have that He exists. When we do evangelism, we should do our best to overcome their objections, but at some point we also have to recognize that some people may be spouting questions or objections to hide the fact that they simply do not want to obey Jesus.
What examples have you seen of someone knowing God exists and knowing that Jesus is God, but still refusing to become a Christian?
How should you interact with a non-Christian who is simply refusing to submit to Jesus?
