Daily Scripture Reading 2John 1:1-6
One of the great defects of modern Christianity is our distorted definition of love. Secular entertainment has deceived Christians into thinking that Biblical love is a feeling or emotion.
Today, we will start reading 2John and see the true Biblical definition of love. Love is not a feeling, it is action.
2John 1 ¶ The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth,
2John 2 for the sake of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever:
Pay attention to the phrase “for the sake of the truth”. The elder wrote this letter for the sake of the truth. He did not write it for the sake of emotions or feelings, but for truth.
The mindset in the 21st century is to downplay the importance of truth and elevate feelings and emotions, but Christians should be doing the opposite. We should prioritize truth and downplay feelings and emotions.
2John 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
2John 4 ¶ I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.
2John 5 Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.
Look at the phrase “from the beginning”. Jesus commanded His disciples to love one another, so that is a command that Christians had from the very beginning of Christianity.
2John 6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.
Don’t miss the definition of love contained in this verse. Love is walking according to God’s commandments.
Modern Christianity has allowed the secular world to redefine our concept of love. Most Christians think love is a feeling or emotion. However, Biblical love is action. Love is obeying God’s commandments.
To what extent has your pastor been deceived into thinking that Biblical love is a feeling or emotion?
How effectively does your church teach that the true Biblical definition of love is obeying the commandments of God?
How well do you practice the true definition of love?
