When a customer walks into a restaurant, he is there to be served. When an employee of that same restaurant goes to work, he is there to serve the customer. Many Christians equate being a Christian to being a customer. They think Christianity is an opportunity to receive and have our problems solved. It’s easy for us Christians to focus on what we get out of our relationship with Christ. However, notice the words “fellow worker” in Philemon 1.
Philem. 1 ¶ Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, ¶ To Philemon our beloved brother and fellow worker,
Paul looked at himself and Philemon as workers, not customers. For them, Christianity was a call to give, not a call to receive. Yes, as Christians there are times we need to have our needs met, but we should primarily look at Christianity as a time to serve our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Christian life is not about us and our problems. Notice the phrase “serve the Lord’ in Romans 12:11.
Rom. 12:11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord
