The Bible Is Not Designed To Make Us Feel Good

We live in a society that is big on self-esteem. There is a lot of effort to make people feel good about themselves. Unfortunately, Christians have bought into this mindset and we expect Church and the Bible to make us feel good. However, the Bible is not designed to make us feel good. For example, Genesis 6 and Romans 3 teach us that people are inherently sinful. We are prone to do evil. Exodus 32 illustrates this tendency. When Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the Israelites quickly abandoned God and started worshipping a golden calf. In other words, they were quick to do evil. This truth about humans does not make us feel good about ourselves. When we read the Bible we should expect it to give us a dose of truth and reality, not make us feel good.
